Clean Energy Tax Navigator

Lawyers for Good Government

The Challenge

The Inflation Reduction Act included nearly $400 billion in subsidies and tax credits designed to help local community-based organizations invest in clean energy projects. However, the labyrinthine process of determining eligibility, applying for the credits, and ultimately receiving funds led to a slower-than-expected rollout nationwide. Lawyers for Good Government was positioned to provide pro-bono expertise from its network of tax and energy attorneys, but needed an easy-to-use screening tool to help potential clients prepare for the application process.

The Approach & Solution

Beekeeper Group embedded itself in a multidisciplinary working group to learn the many intricacies of municipal clean energy projects, including the common types of infrastructure supported and the variables that affect eligibility. With a tool like Turbotax as our north star, we designed a self-paced platform that guides the user through a comprehensive series of dynamic questions to prepare them for an eventual sit-down with an expert.

The Results

The Clean Energy Tax Navigator has helped 60 organizations (and counting!) from all income levels successfully obtain free tax assistance and legal resources for their 2023 projects.
