The Challenge

Local news organizations across the country were struggling to make the case for their own value. Most Americans don’t connect local news to the issues they care about most — public safety, schools, and local accountability — making it hard to build public support or secure investment. Organizations that wanted to advocate for local news lacked tested, resonant language to make that case effectively, especially across partisan lines.

The Approach & Solution

Rather than running a traditional issue campaign, Beekeeper built a communications infrastructure the whole sector could use. We conducted public opinion research with intentional oversamples of Black and African American communities, Spanish-speaking communities, and rural residents to ensure the messaging reflected a broad range of lived experiences. We tested language to identify what resonates across partisan lines — finding that frames like “accountability” and “keeping tabs on local government” outperformed abstract concepts. From there, we developed a full messaging architecture: audience-specific talking points, scripts, and plain-language toolkits released as free, open-access resources, including Spanish-language materials developed from research rather than translation. We extended the work through network training and webinars to help organizations put the messaging into practice.

The Results

Words That Work became one of Press Forward’s most-used resources of 2025, adopted by newsrooms for fundraising, subscriber outreach, and community appeals. Major journalism support organizations — including INN, LMA, NAHJ, NABJ, and API — promoted and integrated the work nationally. The messaging framework is now being featured in the Local News Day campaign launching April 9, 2026.
